For the month of July, when you enjoy a glass, bottle or carafe of our CUCINA private label wine in any of our restaurants, you’ll be supporting March of Dimes and their work to end premature birth and other problems that threaten babies. March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.
Each year, about 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely, which means before 37 weeks. Prematurity can cause long-term health problems for babies, which can have long-lasting financial effects and can affect a person’s education and ability to work. Premature birth is not just a worry of parents and babies, but also costly to society. In 2007, the Institute of Medicine reported that the cost associated with premature birth in the United Sates was $26.2 billion each year, which includes almost $17 billion in medical and health care costs for the baby.
Babies’ brains and organs are developing all the way up until the time of birth. In fact, a baby’s brain at 35 weeks weighs only two-thirds of what it will weigh at 39 to 40 weeks. Babies born with a brain that isn’t fully developed can go on to have learning and behavioral problems throughout childhood. In fact, about one in three children born prematurely will need special school services at some during their schooling years.
The March of Dimes was born from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s personal struggle with polio, which led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. After funding research for polio vaccines, the foundation turned its attention to preventing birth defects and infant mortality, which would eventually shift its name the March of Dimes in 1979.
March of Dimes is a large national organization with chapters in San Diego and Orange County, which specifically help babies and families in our communities. You can get involved in March of Dimes’ events like their gala, Signature Chefs Auction and annual spring-time walk, March for Babies. There are also opportunities to volunteer and give directly. Of course, follow March of Dimes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date on news from this great organization.
We’re pleased to support March of Dimes at CUCINA urbana and all three CUCINA enoteca restaurants as our Sip + Support partner. Cin Cin!
