San Diego Coastkeeper, our Sip + Support partner for July, protects and restores fishable, swimmable, drinkable water in San Diego County. A dedicated team of staff and volunteers use legal action, advocacy, science and education to do everything from fighting water pollution to defending our water supply.

San Diego Coastkeeper organizes bi-monthly beach cleanups to keep San Diego beautiful and protect marine life and ocean water quality. Trash on the beach ends up in the ocean where it can entrap marine life and cause harm when mistaken for food. San Diego Coastkeeper’s volunteer efforts removed 10,455 pounds of trash last year! San Diego Coastkeeper sponsors beach cleanups twice per month and has free beach cleanup kits anyone can borrow. They also record the amount and type of trash they remove to help inform policy decisions and scientific research.

San Diego Coastkeeper advocates for state and local policy decisions that protect and restore fishable, swimmable, drinkable water. Through their advocacy and legal efforts, local shipyards are removing 30 years of toxic pollutants from our bay and the City of San Diego invested $1 billion in sewage infrastructure upgrades, which reduced sewage spills by 90 percent.

You can find the next volunteer opportunity here and more about San Diego Coastkeeper’s work here. You can also check out their water quality reports for different watersheds across the county and check their daily updated beach advisories to make sure the ocean is safe before you swim. Of course, we encourage you to follow San Diego Coastkeeper on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date with their latest news.

CUCINA is proud to team up with this great nonprofit who is making our county more fishable, swimmable and drinkable now and for generations.
